The idea of a Texas showdown was a brainchild of a discussion between Chris Chou (Ranma0005) and Javier Moreno (Javi) in 2000, after the Japan vs. USA event. It was decided that a major tournament (well, more important than regionals) would be best for Texas and surrounding areas. So what follows is the timeline from the 1st to the present.
2001
The first Texas Showdown was held at the University of Houston, in Houston TX. This was the first time that players came from out of state, such as Ricky Ortiz, Duc Do, Ari Weintraub and Arturo Sanchez. It was widely believed that Ricky Ortiz would storm CvS1 (yes, CvS1) and take home the cash, but it was not meant to be as Hsien Chang pulled off a tremendous upset by picking Evil Ryu to pick off Ricky's four R1 characters. The tournament also featured the first time that the infamous MSP (Magneto/Storm/Psylocke) debuted at a tournament. Although the team's potential was fully realized back then, it did provide a vison of things to come in the MvC2 scene. In addition, it was the first tournament that a tie occured (MvC2). It set a precedent for all future tournaments, where ties for 1st-4th are never allowed again. Unfortunately, only three games were on showcase at this tournament, due to the arcade's inability to provide other games, which has been since remedied.

2002
In tandem with JabStrongFierce Productions to promote their SF documentary, Texas Showdown 2 was held in Austin, TX. Bang the Machine was on display at the SXSW Film Festival. To help promote the film, a tournament was arranged with Peter Kang, Chris Wong and Javier Moreno. Machines were graciously donated by the Stargate, and again, even more players came from states like Colorado, Florida, California and Louisiana, to name a few. Top players such as John Choi, Ben (tragic) Cureton, Seth Killian among others took the trek down from their busy schedules. The first major for CvS2 was held here in conjunction with March Madness in Philly, along with tournaments in MvC2, ST, and 3rd Strike. This year, 3rd strike was held on consoles, simply because Stargate had malfunctioning CPS3 boards. Results will come later. .

2003
2003 marked the return of Texas Showdown to Houston, where it rightfully belongs. The event also featured the grand opening of Lollicup Tea Zone in downtown Houston, which is owned/operated by Chris Wong's brother, Dorian Wong. Players such as Justin Wong, Tom Cannon, and Desmond Pinkney decided to come down and join the festivities for our biggest Showdown yet. 2003 was a year to remember, where MvC2 retook center stage as the marquee tournament, with GGXX and CvS2 following close behind. Results will be posted here once I obtain the archive from www.shoryuken.com. .
